FOOTHILL Overhead Door

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question #1 : What can I do if my garage door doesn't open ?

Answer #1 : Check for broken springs.

Answer #2 : First check to see if the motor is running. Second if it is make sure that the screw , chain or belt is moving. Third if there is movement make sure that the carraige is engaged and not in the manual mode.

Answer #3 : Make sure that the door is balanced properly. The door should not be hard to lift Called a heavy door it should have a nice balance point about half way through the open and close stroke.

Answer #4 : Check to see if the clutch or sensitivity adjustments are set with enough power to lift the door. Do not over tighten or adjust or you will not have any auto reverse.

Answer #5 : Check the motor starting capacitor for leakage as this may cause the motor to lack the torque neccessary for proper operation. An old trick on Genie screw drives was to grab the back of the screw where the adjusting clutch nut is and twist the screw while pressing a remote control at the same time to see if the motor will run. But be carefull !!!

Answer #6 : If your garage opener makes a grinding noise while it is opening as opposed to closing sometimes you can suspect the carraige.

Answer #7 : Make sure the opener has power going to it.

Answer #8 : Make sure that the vacation switch is off on your wall console or the door will close but not open on some models.

Answer #9 : If the garage opener is a Genie brand with limit switches check and see if the up limit switch is stuck closed. This will make the opener think that the door is already open.

Question #2 : What can I do if my garage door doesn't close ?

Answer #1 : Make sure that the door is not to springy or hard to push down.

Answer #2 : Check to make sure the down force adjustment or clutch has enough torque to push the door down but not to much as to cause the door not to auto-reverse.

Answer #3 : On newer openers check to make sure that the optical safety-beams are working properly. First make sure that the indicator light located on your safety-beams are solid and not blinking. If the light is blinking make sure that the lenses are clean and that there are no obstructions blocking the path of the infrared beam traveling from lense to lense. If those solutions are not helpful make sure that the lenses are aligned properly by grabbing the safety-beam and gently twisting the bracket back into realignment until the light stops blinking. If that does not work make sure that there are no staples digging into the wire causing a short. Also check for pinched wires that run from the opener to the safety-beams.To make sure that the safety-beams are the problem you can just HOLD the wall button and the door should close. If the door closes by ( holding ) the wall button but doesn't close by pressing and depressing it quickly, " suspect the optical safety-beams. "

Answer #4 : Is the opener installed in the position that the manufacture recommends? The motorhead of the opener should not be hung to high. One piece (jamb) doors should have a slight downward pitch. On sectional doors it is also important that the motorhead is not installed to high as well. Normally what will happen on jamb or sectional doors if the opener is installed to high, is that it will cause the door to buckle when the opener attempts to close the door. This action takes place when the angle of the pusharm is pointing down towards the top rail of the door rather than pushing the door towards its direction of travel. Most of the time the door will auto- reverse and or put alot of stress on the top rail of the door. Two good examples of proper position technique are shown by CLICKING HERE for jamb doors or by CLICKING HERE for sectional doors. These diagrams should also be in your installation manual. Another very important consideration is to make sure that the opener is centered with the center support or center stylus of the door.

Answer #5 : Make sure that that the carraige is engaged and not on manual mode.

Answer #6 :If the garage opener is a Genie brand with limit switches check the down limit switch to make sure that it is not stuck closed. This will cause the opener to think that it is already closed.

Answer #7 : Make sure that there is power going into the opener. If none of the answers are helpful you can may decide to contact a local garage door company or CLICK HERE to contact us.

Question #3 : What can I do if my remote controls don't work?

Answer #1 : First of all make sure that the opener works from the wall button. If it does check to see if it's just one remote control or all of the remote controls. If it's just one remote control check the code on that remote. Next check if the indicator light on your remote control is solid or bright. If not replace the battery. Batterys should be replaced every six months. If none of the remote controls are working , make sure that all of the remote controls are coded into the receiver. If you have made all of the preceding checks it can usually be presumed that the receiver is bad.

Question #4 : What can I do if my garage door opener is not working with the wall button or remote controls ?

Answer #1 : Make sure that there is power being supplied to the opener.

Answer #2 : If the motor is running and nothing is happening make sure that the carraige is engaged for auto-matic mode.

Answer #3 : Check to see if there power coming out of the secondary of the transformer. The voltage should be 24volts to 38volts AC depending on the opener. This check requires a volt-meter and should only be performed by someone with an understanding of electricity.

Answer #4 : Normally a majority of the time the problem is with the sequensor or logic board. This component is the main control or ( brain ) of the garage door opening system.

Answer #5 : Another occurrence that can take place is bad remote control with a stuck button staying keyed all the time. Disconnect the batterys from all remotes and try the opener from the wall button. If the opener works you will need to figure out which remote control is causing the problem.

Answer #6 : Another occurrence that can also take place is a bad push button , push button wire or wall console. A problem with anyone of these components can cause a short. Try disconnecting the wire from the push button or wall console and then short the wires together. If the motor runs the problem is with the push button or wall console. If the motor doesn't run disconnect the wires from the terminals on the motorhead of the opener. Next depress a remote control to see if this causes the opener to run. If the motor runs the problem is the push button wire itself. If none of these answers have been helpful...CLICK HERE to contactus... or you may elect to contact a local garage door professional.
